We give an ode to our Highland Heritage Collection with this beautiful, quaint pair of signed oil on board paintings, 'Mending the Creels', by artist Henry Pitcher, c. 1890.
In Scotland, the sea town and coastal way of life was and is a pivotal lifeline to the Inner and Outer Hebrides, and all towns along the West and East coasts of the country. Fisherfolk to this day, still use creels for fishing and still possess the skillsets for making and mending them. This set of paintings highlights important parts of the Highland and Scottish culture, then and now. Today, fishing is still a vital aspect to the economy and survival in the coastal areas of Scotland and its isles.
