From the time of the Roman invasions and earlier, most people stayed far away from the Scottish Highlands because it was known as a wild, dangerous place. The Romans couldn't conquer the Picts and Scots, hence, Hadrian's Wall. Sir Walter Scott introduced a new era to the world, with his novels; he romanticized the Scottish Highlands through stories and imagery.
