Antique Brass Unicorn Trivet
19th Century Brass Unicorn Trivet on three feet. This trivet depicts the national animal of Scotland; the Unicorn. This mythological creature has been the animal of Scotland for over 600 years. This trivet is a beautiful piece for the dining table or islands, or can serve as a riser in any space like counters, shelves, etc.
The unicorn first appeared on the Scottish royal coat of arms in the 12th century under William I. In the 15th century, King James II adopted the unicorn and had it appear on coins, shields, and coats of arms. The unicorn symbolizes purity, innocence, masculinity, and power. In Celtic mythology, only virgin maidens or Scottish kings could tame unicorns. In Scottish heraldry, unicorns are often depicted with gold chains around them, which is thought to represent the power of Scottish kings. Unicorns can be found in Scottish architecture, especially in Edinburgh, where there are prominent statues outside the Palace of Holyroodhouse and St Margaret's Chapel at Edinburgh Castle.
