Antique Coromandel Wood Box, Circa 1850, Wedgwood
The star of the show. An Authentic, c.1850 Coromandel wood slope front box with ornate brass decorations and working lock & key. Retailed by James Howell and Co. Regent Street, London, UK. Markers plate set in interior of box.
Adorned with an inset, oval authentic Wedgwood cartouche to lid. Stunning coromandel wood veneer on all sides, this box has it all. Brass finishings surround the inset Wedgwood cartouche, with brass roping detail. Each corner and lock face are adorned with brass plates and studs. Interior of box is in fine condition. Royal blue silk lined interior lid. Rare.
History of Coromandel Wood: During the reign of Queen Victoria, Coromandel was considered one of the most exotic, luxurious and expensive woods to work with and it was the veneer of choice for some of the finest boxes.
Coromandel wood was sourced from India and South East Asia and was an incredibly dense, close-grained wood. Visually a more vibrant and figured (patterned) variety from the Ebony family, the actual species of Coromandel became virtually extinct by the beginning of the 20th century. Today, the nearest relation to Coromandel is Macassar Ebony.
Disclaimer(s): Slight staining on interior silk material, primarily on the bottom portion of the lid interior lining; see photos.
Dimensions: 7.5 inches high, 9.25 inches wide, 6 inches deep
Period: 19th Century, 1850 | Provenance: England, United Kingdom
