Antique Church of St. Helen Cathedral Watercolor
Antique Original, Signed, Watercolor 'Interior of the Church of St Helen', dated June 1847, West Auckland, Durham, England; by John Storey (1828-1888). The frame is tagged George Hughes Fine Art Dealer, Bewick House 50 & 52 Pilgrim Street, Newcastle on Tyne. Wood backing and gold finish wood. Artist signature en verso.
Like many of our watercolors, the details of this piece are highly technical and make you feel as though you are standing inside this old, historic church. Your eye goes directly to the fine details of the stone floors, walls, and ceilings. You can feel the sun beaming through the windows, and the pops of red throughout the painting bring life to the mostly stone environment. There is a woman down the row, despite being further in the background, you still appreciate the details of her attire, and wonder who she is.
The cathedral windows sit at the center of the piece, but do not take away from the architectural beauty. The scale and perspective are executed to perfection. This painting is one where you wish you could step in, take a seat in the pews to enjoy the quiet of the stone provides and warmth of the sun. One of our favorite features of well-done watercolors is the artist's ability to capture light and smoke as though it's been photographed or viewed in real time; a fine example.
